Although there are 4 types of assault offence, they are all very different in nature. You could be charged with common assault if you touch someone without their permission or push them. With ABH, the injuries sustained could amount to bruising or scratches to justify an ABH charge. Section 20 GBH could involve loss of blood or broken bones whilst the most serious charge, section 18 wounding with intent, the injuries could involve a stabbing or bottling.
Which assault offence you are charged with is important because the penalties are very different.
